Wisconsin State SHRM
2011 Leadership Conference
Heidel House, Green Lake, WI
Thursday, August 4 – Friday, August 5, 2011
The 2011 WI SHRM State Leadership Conference theme, “The Journey is the Reward,” was based on a simple Chinese proverb going back to ancient times. Often the most important things in life are the journeys we find ourselves on along the way to achieving our goals. The leadership conference was designed to be a path of enlightenment for our state SHRM volunteer leaders.
Close to 100 professionals, students, presenters, and sponsors participated in our conference at the Heidel House Resort in Green Lake on August 5 & 6, 2011. Through our HR Make a Difference Day video highlights, we saw how colleagues across the state gave their time and worked together to make a difference for other people. We ventured into the world of social media with Deano Pape of theDeano opening our eyes to new possibilities through his presentation Stop Worrying and Learn to Love Social Media. We embraced innovation with Steve Tyink’s presentation The Last Business Frontier, learning the importance of how to design experiences that elicit the emotional outcomes desired from our customers and employees. With Juliet Kosarzycki of Yellow Zone International in Change Your Thoughts, Change Your Reality – The 7 Levels of Energy and Leadership, we understood the choices people have in determining how they respond to situations. With Pamela Lassiter in If the World Were a Village of 100 People, we were enlightened to our critical role in navigating the complexities of a diverse and inclusive workforce in our organizations.
There were many opportunities for enrichment of one’s professional leadership journey, and opportunities to learn from colleagues and subject matter experts. At our chapter leader panels, student networking roundtables and Labyrinth Circles of Knowledge, leaders engaged in dialogue, shared best practices, asked questions, provided feedback, and provoked thought. Some of the adventuresome participated in the A-MAZE-ing race teambuilding activity, and many took an opportunity to relax a bit and take in the unique qualities of picturesque Green Lake on a scenic cruise.
Our sponsoring partners were Leadership E-cademy, Lee Hecht Harrison, and Moraine Park Technical College. We appreciate these organizations for generously supporting this professional development opportunity for all of our leaders.
We appreciate the efforts of our planning committee of Tasha Sledge, Barbara Stroh, Laura Biehn, Kellie Dunn-Poggemann, and Kristine Hackbarth-Horn and our logistic, registration, and communication support from Kari Heilman, Leah Rozeski, Anthony Dix, Cassy Van Dyke, and Morgan Data Solutions. We are also grateful to our other State Council members who helped to coordinate breakout sessions and/or conference activities – Sue Estes, Colleen Korth, Matt Stollak, Margie Harvey, Ryan Derber, Terri Brown, Greg Hubley, and Michelle Hauer.
Thanks to all attendees for their time, talent, dedication, and passion that they bring to the important work of Human Resources in each of their organizations and communities. Embrace the future and lead your colleagues along the way. Your journey is your reward!
